News Synopsis

Honda Power Pack Energy India and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding and a commercial agreement to collaborate in the field of electric mobility and provide battery swapping services at HPCL retailers in major cities in India.

In October 2021, Honda Motor Co. Limited, Japan announced plans to start a battery sharing service in India, starting with electric tricycles, through its newly established subsidiary Honda Power Pack Energy India.

With Honda's battery sharing service, rickshaw drivers can stop by the nearest battery replacement station in the city of their choice to replace the discharged battery with a fully charged battery.

By using this service, drivers can significantly reduce the initial cost of purchasing an EV and reduce the risk of running out of battery. This reduces the risk that the driver will miss a business opportunity while waiting for the battery to be recharged.

Honda plans to start a BaaS (Battery as a Service) business from the city of Bangalore in the first half of 2022 on a commercial basis. Honda will build a strong network of battery replacement stations in strategic locations such as HPCL retail stores.
