News Synopsis

Beijing on Friday noticed heavy smog, so much so that it was impossible to even see tall buildings clearly. The intensity of the smog was great and lasted for very long. This forced the city to close down highways and playgrounds and put a ban on any outdoor activities to avoid serious implications of the smog. The Beijing Municipal corporation issued a yellow alert for heavy pollution and asked everyone to stay indoors. This came amidst China’s rising coal production and faced strong backlash from international conferences. China is already the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitter and now it aims to increase its coal production.

Time and again, other countries have stood against China’s ignorant attitude towards the environment but China doesn’t seem to care. Coal production is only the beginning as the country aims to establish many Nuclear power plants in the coming years. All this would have serious implications on the environment but the country doesn’t seem to care.  Although China’s President Xi Jinping claims to move towards a greener future, his actions go completely against that. The climate activists say they are sick of conferences that bring nothing to the table. They merely discuss future possibilities but don't force countries to adopt greener methods. Recently a report suggested that if not controlled, the temperature of Earth will rise by 1 degree Celsius and that would bring in many destructive changes.
