News Synopsis

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued promising news for those sweltering under the intense heatwave gripping parts of India. Their latest weather bulletin predicts a gradual decrease in the severity of heatwave conditions starting from May 30th.

Heatwave Loosens Grip on Central and Northwest India

Regions like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, and Madhya Pradesh can expect some respite from the scorching temperatures. The IMD forecasts a decline in the impact of the heatwave in these areas from today onwards.

However, Delhi residents might have to endure one last scorcher before the relief arrives. The weather office predicts a maximum temperature of 46 degrees Celsius for the National Capital today, along with partly cloudy skies and a possibility of very light rain with thunderstorms.

On Wednesday, Delhi witnessed a record-breaking high of 46.8 degrees Celsius at the Safdarjung Observatory, with Mungeshpur recording a staggering 52.9 degrees Celsius (an anomaly currently under investigation by the IMD).

Heatwave Forecast:

  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a gradual decrease in extreme heatwave conditions in most parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Madhya Pradesh, starting today.

  • Isolated areas in these regions might still experience heatwave conditions until June 1st.

  • A gradual decrease in heatwave intensity is expected across Northwest and Central India.

Monsoon Watch: Kerala Gears Up for Arrival

While Central and Northwest India experience a reprieve from the heat, conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for the arrival of the monsoon in Kerala and the Northeastern states.

Heavy Rainfall Forecast:

  • The IMD predicts isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Arunachal Pradesh in the next four days.

  • Isolated heavy rainfall is also expected over Manipur, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram on May 30th, and Kerala and Mahe for the next four days.

Maximum Temperature Forecast:

  • The IMD forecasts a gradual decline in maximum temperatures by 3-4 degrees Celsius across Central and Northwest India over the next 3-4 days.

  • As of Wednesday, maximum temperatures ranged from 46-50 degrees Celsius in many parts of Northwest India and 42-46 degrees Celsius in many parts of West, Central, and East India.
