Google Teams Up With Walmart to Bring One-Click Shopping to Gemini AI
News Synopsis
Google has announced a major upgrade to its Gemini AI chatbot by integrating direct shopping and checkout features through partnerships with Walmart, Shopify, Wayfair and other major retailers. The move allows users to browse, select, and buy products without leaving the Gemini app, marking a major shift toward AI-driven commerce.
Google Expands Gemini Into an AI Shopping Platform
Google confirmed on Sunday that it is transforming Gemini into both a digital assistant and a virtual merchant. By teaming up with Walmart, Shopify, Wayfair and additional retail partners, Gemini will now support in-chat product discovery and purchasing.
The announcement was made during the opening day of the National Retail Federation (NRF) annual convention in New York, where artificial intelligence and consumer buying behavior are key themes.
Instant Checkout Coming to Gemini
Google and Walmart revealed that Gemini will soon offer instant checkout, allowing users to complete purchases without switching to another website or app. Customers will be able to use various payment providers to complete purchases directly inside Gemini, making the process faster and more seamless.
How Gemini’s AI Shopping Works
Gemini’s AI shopping assistant will respond to product-based questions with real-time inventory from participating retailers.
For example:
If a user asks Gemini what equipment they need for a ski trip, the chatbot will display relevant items from partner stores.
Walmart Customers Get Personalized AI Shopping
Walmart shoppers who connect their Walmart and Gemini accounts will receive product recommendations based on their shopping history.
According to the companies, any products selected inside Gemini will be automatically added to users’ Walmart or Sam’s Club online shopping carts, allowing shoppers to complete checkout later or instantly.
What Walmart and Google Say
John Furner, Walmart’s incoming president and CEO, said:
"The transition from traditional web or app search to agent-led commerce represents the next great evolution in retail,"
The statement was issued jointly with Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.
OpenAI and Amazon Are Racing Google
This move puts Google into direct competition with OpenAI and Amazon, both of which are also building AI-powered shopping assistants. OpenAI and Walmart announced a similar partnership in October, allowing ChatGPT users to access instant checkout for most Walmart products except fresh groceries.
Before the holiday season, OpenAI also introduced an in-app checkout feature allowing users to buy products from selected retailers and Etsy sellers directly inside ChatGPT.
AI Is Already Driving Billions in Sales
Salesforce estimated that AI influenced USD 272 billion, or 20 per cent of global retail sales, during the holiday shopping season. This shows how rapidly AI is changing how consumers discover and buy products online.
Where Gemini Shopping Will Be Available
Google confirmed that the AI shopping features will initially launch in the United States. The company plans to expand Gemini’s shopping tools to international markets in the coming months.
Why This Matters for E-Commerce
By allowing customers to move from browsing to buying in a single AI chat window, Google is reshaping the future of online shopping. Instead of clicking links and visiting multiple websites, users can now rely on AI-driven recommendations, price comparisons, and checkout in one place.
This shift could significantly impact how retailers compete for consumer attention in the digital marketplace.
