News Synopsis

Google was skeptical of Chrome's user interface and layout changes due to its large user base. However, such changes may be in progress in its Chrome browser, with the introduction of a customizable toolbar shortcut.

Google on Android takes the traditional approach of using a toolbar that includes a home button, address bar, tab switcher, and an overflow menu that includes many such actions.

Google now seems to have extensively deployed toolbar shortcuts between Omnibox and tab buttons/counters. You'll see one of three actions that may appear here including the New tab (plus sign), Share, or Voice Search (Microphone).

Toolbar shortcuts will return to Chrome 92 for Android in July 2021. They were introduced to several people as part of regular A/B testing. Even after version 101 stabilizes on Tuesday, Google has not officially announced features yet, but availability has increased significantly in recent weeks.

This customizable toolbar is a small change in a large scheme. However, it also represents a non-negligible UI addition to the Chrome layout for Android. Google should consider this new update as a big enough improvement for users to roll out.
