News Synopsis

Google Chat announced on Thursday that it will replace Hangouts with banners warning users of possible phishing and malware attacks from personal accounts. This Google Chat tweak is the latest addition to Google's attempts to prevent phishing.

During the 2022 I/O developers conference, Google talked about some of the security measures implemented to improve user security, including warnings of potential security issues and recommendations on how to fix them. Google has also presented other plans for security measures, such as enhanced two-step verification, ad customization, and enhanced data security.

Google's new warning banner first appeared in Gmail's workspace account to show attempts to lure someone with links that could be used for malware, phishing, or ransomware. In late April, Google extended the banner to Google Docs, telling users that malicious files were suspected in some Google Workspace apps (documents, sheets, slides, drawings) regardless of where the link was opened.

The new feature will be released over the next couple of weeks, and it will be available for both personal Google accounts and for all Google Workplace customers.
