News Synopsis

Google is adding support for 24 new languages to its translation tool, the company announced at the I/O 2022 Developers Conference. Newly available languages include Sanskrit, Tsonga, and Sorani Kurdish.

One of the recently added Assamese is used by about 25 million people in northeast India. Another language, Dhivehi is spoken by about 300,000 people in the Maldives.

According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, this expansion will cover languages spoken by more than 300 million people and will increase the total number of languages supported by Google Translate to 133. Pichai recognizes the breakthrough in the new single-language AI. An approach to learning Google's translation algorithm learns how to translate parts of the text without first looking at a sample.

In a blog post published during the event, Google acknowledged that the approach wasn't perfect yet, but said it would continue to work on technology to provide the same experience as languages such as Spanish and German.

Google last added a significant number of languages to Google Translate in 2020, when the company updated its tools to support Kinyarwanda, Odia, Tatar, Turkmen, and Uyghur.
