News Synopsis

General Motors plans to make a fresh start to the 119-year-old brand by migrating Buick's North American lineup to fully electric vehicles by the end of the decade.

GM said the introduction of the new electric sports utility vehicle planned for 2024 marks the beginning of Buick's transition to the all-EV portfolio. The company refused to provide details of this model, which will be Buick's first electric vehicle to be sold in the United States.

GM is reviving the name from Buick's past to make the switch. The Electra was a large sedan that was sold for decades before its name was phased out around 1990. According to a GM spokesman, all future Buick electric vehicles will carry the Electra name with different alphanumerical identifiers depending on the model.

The conversion comes under the GM’s plan to offer electrics across all of its vehicle portfolios all around the world. The automaker has already lined out plans for the luxury Cadillac brand to sell only electric models by the end of the decade.

Other luxury car brands such as Stellantis NV's Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, and Rolls-Royce, have also announced their intention to phase out internal combustion engines altogether by the end of the decade.
