News Synopsis

On Tuesday, GE Steam Power announced a USD 165 million contract with state-owned engineering firm BHEL to supply three nuclear steam turbines.

According to a company statement, GE Steam Power has signed a USD 165 million contract with BHEL for the supply of three nuclear steam turbines out of six units for NPCIL's domestic nuclear program-phase 1 being developed at Gorakhpur, Haryana (units - 1 to 4 (GHAVP)) and Kaiga (Kaiga-5&6) Karnataka.

This domestic programme includes 12 700 MWe units developed by NPCIL using their own nuclear reactor technology, namely Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR). According to the company, it will provide 8.4GW of CO2-free electricity to the country, enough to power more than 14 million homes.

In 2018, GE and BHEL signed a business cooperation agreement as well as a License and Technology Transfer Agreement to manufacture 700 MW nuclear steam turbines. The two companies are well-positioned to meet the country's demand for a lower-carbon energy source.

GE will manufacture nuclear steam turbines at its facility in Sanand, Gujarat, as part of the government of India's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. These turbines are being engineered and manufactured with a better design for increased output that will meet the customer's needs.
