News Synopsis

Foxconn, Apple supplier, is offering around $1500 as signing bonus, more than a month of wages in an effort to attract workers in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou, also known as the iPhone city.

According to the SCMP, Foxconn's Zhengzhou production site currently employs 300,000 workers and accounts for around half of the world’s iPhone production. The production site is providing the bonus after seeing the surge in the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in the city. Some parts of the city are under lockdown and travel restrictions have been imposed on those who are entering and exiting the area.

This has caused a geographical limitation from where the company can hire workers. Other than the Omicron variant, the production and hiring process is also affected by the Chinese new year, which starts on February 1. Most of the employees and workers return to their hometown for the celebration. This is the reason why Foxconn is proposing new offers to lure the locals to join the workforce.
