News Synopsis

According to media reports, Meta-owned-Facebook is not able to account for user data and what it is used for and where is it located. According to Engadget, privacy engineers on Facebook’s Ad and Business Product Team prepared a report last year which was intended to be read by the company’s leadership.

The report detailed how Facebook could address a growing number of data usage regulations, along with new privacy laws in India, South Africa, and elsewhere across the world. The engineers also warned that Facebook would have difficulty making promises to countries on how it would treat the data of its people.

The authors of the report said, “We do not have an adequate level of control and explainability over how our systems use data, and thus we cannot confidently make controlled policy changes or external commitments such as ‘we will not use X data for Y purpose.’”
