News Synopsis

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has criticized Canada for invoking an emergency law prohibiting protesting truck drivers from accessing all types of funds.

He admitted that the turmoil caused by the protests of Canadian truck drivers was illegal, but said it should not have encountered restrictive moves that would result in the loss of access to funds.

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared a national emergency last week after protesting a country's mission to demand immunization of cross-border truck drivers. The riots have caused serious blockages and turmoil in the city of Ottawa and elsewhere.

The government then began using emergency authority to prevent protesters from accessing Canada's banks and financial system.

Canada's Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said Thursday that banks moved swiftly to freeze the bank accounts of those involved in the protest, without fear of court orders or civil liability. Contributions to digital assets and cryptocurrencies also fall under this law. His comments suggested that eliminating middlemen is not a rebellious move, but it will actually increase efficiency.
