News Synopsis

Essar has announced that it has formed a transformative new joint venture, Vertex Hydrogen Limited with Progressive Energy. It is planning to build the largest hydrogen hub in the UK under this joint venture at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex.Vertex Hydrogen will provide a catalyst for the development of the hydrogen economy in North West England and North Wales as a central part of the HyNet decarbonisation cluster. It comes under Essar’s strategy to focus on investing in energy transition through the transformation of existing portfolio companies and investment in new ventures. The first low-carbon hydrogen facility at Essar aims at producing 1GW per year of hydrogen across two units from 2026. It will also provide low carbon energy to replace fossil fuels in the industry across the HyNet region as well as heating homes and fuelling buses, trains, and trucks. The total investment to deliver the hydrogen hub is estimated at around £1 billion. Essar will use the hydrogen produced to reduce the carbon footprint at Stanlow Manufacturing Complex.
