News Synopsis

Tesla's board director James Murdoch says that Elon Musk has put out a  potential successor who may take over as the company's CEO.

During his testimony on Wednesday in a case involving a shareholder lawsuit against Tesla and Musk about the CEO's $50 billion compensation package, Murdoch made the comments.

When asked if Musk has ever named anyone as a potential successor, Murdoch responded that the business mogul "actually has," but only in the last few months.

Murdoch claimed in the recorded deposition, which was presented during the trial, that Musk never suggested he might be about to leave Tesla or scale back his involvement. However, Murdoch provided more details during his live testimony.

Murdoch added, "We've had conversations, certainly during the really tough times here," Murdoch said. "You know, conversations about his exhaustion, about other things like that, but no, never explicit threats."

Regarding the potential replacement, Musk had mentioned, Murdoch made no comment about them.

In recent weeks, the billionaire has been spending a lot of time working at Twitter. Musk stated that Twitter has taken a lot of his time during his earlier hearing on Wednesday, but he will soon have more time to devote to other projects.

"There's an initial burst of activity needed post acquisition to reorganize the company, but then I will reduce my time [committement] to Twitter to find somebody else to run Twitter over time," Musk stated.

Musk said in his statement that he ultimately doesn't want to run any company as CEO and considers himself more of an engineer than a businessman.
