Elon Musk Eyes Satellite Deal for Amazon Rainforest

News Synopsis

Elon Musk, the world's wealthiest person, flew to Brazil on Friday to announce plans to connect thousands of Amazon schools to the Internet to help monitor illegal logging in the world's largest rainforest.

In a joint statement with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, CEO of Space Exploration Technologies Corp, he said he plans to use the Starlink satellite network of rocket company SpaceX to bring 19,000 of the furthest schools online. Musk did not provide any further information about this project.

Billionaires who recently agreed to buy Twitter are planning to expand Starlink to most developing countries by the end of next year, with services already in more than 30 countries.

Mr. Musk who also runs Tesla, recently made satellite internet systems available in Ukraine after Ukraine requested it following the Russian invasion. The Starlink website shows that the service is already available in parts of southeastern Brazil.

Mr. Bolsonaro Brazil’s right-wing leader has expressed support for Mr. Musk ever since he announced his plans to buy Twitter, calling the billionaire a “legend of freedom” who would reintroduce “freedom of speech” to social media.
