News Synopsis

The world's richest man, Elon Musk, is promoting a brand-new perfume as he maintains a tradition of making what appear to be jokes into in-demand products.

Musk tweeted about the perfume on Tuesday before changing his Twitter profile to "Perfume Salesman," calling it "Burnt Hair" and described as "the essence of disgusting longing." The perfume is priced at $100 a pop, on a separate sales page published by Musk's tunnelling company, Boring Co. Musk later tweeted that 10,000 bottles had been sold.

In a previous post from September, the billionaire had stated that Boring Co. would launch a scent for men that will help them "stand out in a crowd." Given his last name, he tweeted in jest on Tuesday that going into the fragrance industry was inevitable. He asked: "Why did I even fight it for so long!?"

The CEO of Tesla Inc. has a history of launching products that his devoted fans have sought after as collectors based on jokes.

Huge interest was generated when the Boring Co. sold a small batch of 20,000 flamethrowers in 2018 to raise $10 million for its tunnel-building tests.

A pair of satin short shorts (priced at $69.420) to celebrate beating short sellers and a Tesla Tequila based on an April Fools' Day joke is other goods he has used to tease investors betting against the electric vehicle manufacturer.
