News Synopsis
The Chief Executive Officer of Tesla Elon Musk
has joined the list of people who have criticized the tech giant, Apple for its App Store commission. On Tuesday, in a couple of tweets, Musk slammed US-based tech company Apple for charging a 30% commission from developers on the
App Store's paid app downloads and in-app purchases.
In one of his tweets, he said, "Apple's store is like having a 30% tax on the Internet. Definitely not ok. Literally 10 times higher than it should be.” Elon Musk isn't the only billionaire who has criticized the commission charged by Apple.
Last year in the month of August,
BuzzFeed News
reported that the CEO of Meta Mark Zuckerberg, at a companywide meeting, commented that Apple has a "stranglehold as a gatekeeper on what gets on phones" and charges "monopoly rents" that curb the competition in the App Store. He said this after Apple declined Meta's request to decrease the 30% fee on a new paid feature that Facebook said was planning to assist
small business owners struggling in the pandemic.
Other than Musk and Zuckerberg, many developers, including
Fortnite creator Epic Games,
have also slammed Apple's 30% commission in the past.
