News Synopsis

According to two senior airport officials, Delhi Airport, which was ranked as the world's second busiest airport in March, has surpassed the pre-Covid-19 level of daily average domestic traffic and is anticipated to expand even more during the summer break. According to data, on April 17, the last day of a long weekend, nearly 151,000 domestic travellers utilised Delhi airport, the highest number since the pandemic-induced suspension began. From January 1 to May 10, 2019, the daily average of around 129,000 passengers was substantially higher.

In the past three months, more than 130,000 individuals have travelled from Delhi airport every day, which is more than the average daily passenger in 2019 from January 1 to May 10. The top five destinations for travellers departing from Delhi airport were Mumbai, Bengaluru, Srinagar, Hyderabad and Kolkata.

"Delhi airport is operating 867 domestic flights a day on average, up from 732 in 2021 and 627 in 2020. The number of passengers has also gone up significantly," said an airport official, who did not wish to be identified. In contrast, international passenger traffic has only rebounded to 60% of pre-pandemic levels. The average number of international passengers per day this year is 28,000, down from over 50,000 in 2019. In the first ten days of May, however, the daily average was 33,000, up from 32,800 in April, demonstrating month-over-month growth.
