News Synopsis

On Wednesday, Council for Leather Exports (CLE) has asked the government to extend the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme to the leather sector. Council for Leather Exports has also asked to build a leather park. This will create new employment opportunities and increase the manufacturing capacity and export of leather products. Chairman of CLE, Sanjay Leekha informed that at the current moment, the country’s leather and footwear exports stand at $5.5 billion which is expected to be doubled by the end of 2025. Apart from this the market capitalization of domestic leather and footwear is also expected to increase from $12 billion to $25 billion by 2025. Leekha sought "the support of the government in achieving the envisaged targets by extending the PLI (scheme) to the leather sector and also considering a leather park scheme similar to the textile sector". Narayan Rane Minister of MSME also said that the leather industry has the potential to grow exponentially.
