Microsoft President Warns of Emerging Rivals in AI Development

Microsoft President Brad Smith has issued a warning that Chinese research organizations and companies, including the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence, will become major rivals of ChatGPT, the AI-powered chatbot developed by OpenAI, in the development of generative AI.

Innovation Should Address Concerns, Not Halt Progress

Smith argues that the solution to concerns about generative AI is not to stop innovation but rather to use and improve on existing products. While the technology has potential in fields from business and the arts to education and health care, it has also sparked fears about the automation of many jobs, spreading misinformation, infringing on copyrights, compromising privacy, and leaking sensitive information. Smith argues that innovation can lead to stronger defense against cyber attacks and influence operations, such as those conducted by foreign governments.

Smith said. "Who's ahead and who's behind can change a bit from one part of the year to another, but one thing has been absolutely constant: the gap is almost always measured in months, not years,"

He advised warning: "We should absolutely assume, and even expect, that certain nation states will use AI to launch cyber attacks, even stronger cyber attacks and cyber influence operations than we see today,"

"What we have fundamentally found is that technology innovation, when pursued well, can actually lead to stronger defence at the expense of strong offence. That's the real lesson from the war in Ukraine,"  he asserted, citing American IT firms like Microsoft that have assisted Ukraine in fending off Russian cyberattacks throughout the course of the conflict's year-long duration.

Japan Utilizes ChatGPT for Labor Shortages

Japan is already tapping into ChatGPT to lighten workloads and address labor shortages. The country's three biggest banks are using it to respond to internal queries and reduce paperwork, while insurers such as Tokio Marine are developing an AI system based on the ChatGPT platform to write draft answers for queries from policyholders and insurance agents. Smith believes that such technology can help address one of the biggest challenges facing Asia, which is the need to find new sources of productivity growth to support an aging population.

News Conclusion :The race to develop generative AI is becoming increasingly competitive, with Chinese research organizations and companies emerging as major rivals to ChatGPT, the AI-powered chatbot developed by OpenAI and Microsoft's biggest investment. Microsoft President Brad Smith warns that the solution to concerns about the technology is not to stop innovation but rather to use and improve on existing products, citing the potential for innovation to lead to stronger defense against cyber attacks and influence operations. Japan is already utilizing ChatGPT to address labor shortages, with its biggest banks and insurers developing AI systems based on the platform. As the development of AI continues to progress, it will be crucial to find a balance between innovation and addressing concerns about potential negative impacts.
