News Synopsis

Recently, the Government of India announced that it has approved the administration of the precautionary or the booster dose of the covid vaccine for adults in order to boost its fight against the virus. Shortly after the announcement, vaccine manufacturers, Serum Institutes of India and Bharat Biotech announced a massive reduction in their vaccine prices. The price of Covishield manufactured by the Serum Institute of India has been reduced to Rs. 225 from Rs. 600 whereas the price of Covaxin produced by Bharat Biotech has also been slashed from Rs. 1200 to Rs. 225.

However, private hospitals and vaccination centers can charge up to Rs. 150 as additional charges. The final prices will be visible on the CoWin platform. Union Health Secretary, Rajesh Bhusan said: “Private centers must declare the price per dose chargeable by them on Co-WIN, in accordance with the prices declared by the manufacturers.” The eligible adults will receive this booster dose at the revised price. However, healthcare workers, frontline workers, and people above the age of 60 years will still get their third dose free of cost at the government hospitals or government vaccination centers.
