News Synopsis

The BYD Sealion 7 made its Indian debut in February 2025, starting at an ex-showroom price of ₹48.90 lakh. The premium electric SUV was earlier showcased at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025 and has since attracted attention for its safety credentials. Recently, the Sealion 7 underwent rigorous crash testing by the Euro NCAP and secured a flawless 5-star rating—highlighting its robust safety architecture.

Adult Occupant Safety Performance

In Euro NCAP testing, the Sealion 7 demonstrated impressive performance in adult occupant protection, securing a solid 87% score. During the frontal offset crash test, the passenger cell remained stable, effectively shielding both driver and front passenger. Measurements from test dummies confirmed strong protection for the knees and femurs, regardless of passenger size or seating position.

Additionally, deceleration data from the impact trolley and the condition of the deformable barrier post-collision confirmed that the Sealion 7 would be relatively gentle on other vehicles in head-on impacts. In the full-width rigid barrier test, while the driver was well-protected in all vital areas, the rear passenger’s chest protection was rated as “weak” due to compression levels observed.

Side Impact and Whiplash Protection

The Sealion 7 performed exceptionally well in side impact assessments, including the side pole test, earning full points for protecting all critical body regions. Its center-mounted airbag functioned effectively during side collisions, limiting occupant-to-occupant contact and reducing head injury risks.

Further, the front seats and head restraints provided strong whiplash protection in rear-end impacts. A geometric analysis of rear-seat head restraints also confirmed good protection against whiplash, earning additional points in the evaluation.

Emergency Systems and Post-Crash Safety

The SUV is equipped with an advanced eCall system, which automatically contacts emergency responders in the event of a crash. Additionally, it features a post-impact braking system that minimizes the chances of secondary collisions, contributing to overall post-crash safety.

Child Occupant Safety

Scoring an impressive 93% in child safety, the Sealion 7 excelled in this category as well. In both frontal and side collision simulations, it provided excellent protection to 6- and 10-year-old crash test dummies. The SUV includes the ability to deactivate the front passenger airbag, allowing for the safe use of rear-facing child restraint systems in the front seat. A clear visual indicator informs the driver about the airbag status.

All child restraint systems intended for the vehicle were easily installed and securely accommodated during the tests. Moreover, the Sealion 7 is equipped with a direct child presence detection system. This advanced feature issues alerts if a child is left inside the vehicle after the driver exits, enhancing in-cabin safety.

Safety Features and Crash-Tested Variant Details

The Euro NCAP tests were conducted on the Comfort variant of the Sealion 7, which comes well-equipped with 12 airbags and a comprehensive suite of advanced safety features. These include:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)

  • Speed assistance systems

  • Lane keeping assist

  • Driver fatigue detection system

These features significantly contributed to the Sealion 7’s top-tier performance in crash testing and solidify its position as one of the safest electric SUVs in the segment.
