News Synopsis

A project carried out by the researchers from the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales can help blind people to see in the near future. They have developed a  device called Phoenix 99 that can help them to achieve this. These devices have been recently implanted in sheeps and tested. After the completion of the test, it showed no adverse effects on the sheep and gave positive results. They are now going to commence testing these devices in humans. Phoenix 99 stimulates the retina of a user that enables him to see. The device is wirelessly linked to a camera attached to a pair of glasses. Samuel Eggenberger, a biomedical engineer at the University of Sydney's School of Biomedical Engineering said: "There were no unexpected reactions from the tissue around the device, and we expect it could remain in place for many years”.
