News Synopsis

President Biden said Thursday that he would support Russia being expelled from the G20 over the invasion of Ukraine, to further isolate the Russian president, Vladimir Putin on the international stage.

Vladimir Putin is planning to attend the G20 summit that will be held in Indonesia in October this year. Australian president, Scott Morrison has expressed concerns about Putin attending the summit.

Joe Biden has said that the decision would ultimately be up to the G20, but that he has proposed allowing Ukraine to attend the summit as an observer nation if other members do not agree to remove Russia.

The president of the USA, Joe Biden has also announced earlier that the USA will provide $1 billion in humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, will welcome up to 100,000 Ukrainian refugees and will impose sanctions on more than 600 Russian lawmakers elites and defence.

The G7 and EU also agreed on imposing new initiatives to tighten sanctions enforcement, as well as corporations supporting third countries harmed by sanctions and disruptions to food and energy security.

Joe Biden also said that NATO will soon respond if Russia uses chemical, biological or nuclear weapons in Ukraine, and the nature of response would depend on the nature of use. He also warned about global food shortages and that the G7 and EU have discussed ways to lift restrictions and other measures to alleviate these concerns.
