News Synopsis

RC Bhargava, chairman of Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest car maker, has said that the government should not make Bharat-NCAP norms mandatory in India. Bhargava's statement came after Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari approved the New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP).

RC Bhargava said during a media interaction that the Indian market is very different from the western, full-blown markets. NCAP benchmarks like this are common out there. Bhargava said NCAP should not be mandatory in India as it is quite different from the European market.

He said, NCAP should not be mandatory, India's market is different from the European market. We cannot follow the Road Safety Measures of Europe, we must look at what can be done to provide better transport for two-wheelers. We cannot comply with European Standards of Safety in all our vehicles in India, as we cannot apply it to two wheelers. Are we going to apply it only to the rich, leaving two wheeler owners out of the purview of protection? He said that of course, we should see what can be done to give better transportation to the people using two wheeler vehicles.
