News Synopsis

BBC stated that it will invest in "new capabilities to cover breaking news stories" in a TV news channel, which is set to launch in April 2023. BBC News will replace the two separate UK news channels.

It's part of plans to create a digital-led and streamlined organization. It is believed that the merger will result in the loss of 70 jobs for BBC staff based in the UK. Washington DC will create around 20 jobs.

BBC News Digital Director Naja Nielsen stated that the way people consume current affairs has changed. She said, "In recent years we have seen a huge surge of audiences coming to live coverage with tens and millions following live pages as big stories unfold."

"The BBC is the most trusted news source in the world, and has a vast knowledge base that allows it to provide the best analysis and explanations as these stories unfold," she added.

She stated that investing in this would result in "our news channel, and digital teams, working hand-in-hand for the best journalism to audiences at home and overseas". The BBC will invest in " visualising" programs that are based on popular radio shows. This will include the BBC Radio 5 Live Nicky Campbell program which will air on BBC Two every weekday morning as well as the UK stream.

This is part of cost-saving measures. In January, Nadine Dorries confirmed that the BBC license fee was to be frozen at PS159 for a period of two years.

The corporation announced in May that it would merge its two news channels and stop airing CBBC or BBC Four as traditional broadcast channels. It also announced that it would end its regional TV news programs in Oxford, Cambridge.
