News Synopsis

Apple unveiled a new version of its CarPlay software on Monday, aiming to completely replace your car's clunky interface with a sleek Apple operating system.

The new software also gives us our best look yet at what Apple's long-rumored electric car might look like — at least from the inside. Teaser images show cars that surround drivers in familiar Apple technology, from speedometers to entertainment systems to climate controls.

CarPlay currently converts a car's touchscreen into an extension of a connected iPhone, allowing drivers to use apps like Siri, Spotify, and navigation on a larger, more convenient screen. The next version of CarPlay, announced at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, will go a step further by completely replacing a vehicle's built-in interface, taking control of essential vehicle functions such as the radio, air conditioning, and heated seats.

It means that in the not-too-distant future, drivers will never have to touch their vehicle's software, which can be awkward and unintuitive. Everything they do and see on their vehicle's multiple screens will be filtered through Apple's well-known and appealing operating system.

In cars with a screen in front of the driver, the speedometer and fuel gauge will be integrated into the CarPlay interface. According to Apple, drivers will be able to customise their gauge cluster with a variety of colours, layouts, and styles. According to Apple, another advantage of the new system is the ability to display useful widgets such as real-time weather and calendar events on vehicle screens.
