News Synopsis

Electric Vehicles are rapidly gaining popularity in India. The rate of adoption of EV vehicles is significantly increasing. However, there have been recent incidents where EVs caught fire. This has raised some serious safety concerns about Electric Vehicles. On Wednesday, the Chief Executive Officer of NITI Aayog, Amitabh Kant asked EV original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to voluntarily recall batches involved in the EV fire incidents. While interacting with CNBC, Mr. Kant told that, this is a crucial time and EV makers in a bid to instill a sense of safety and confidence should recall their EVs the way global automakers do by voluntarily recalling their vehicles over fire risks.

He commented, "Manufacturing of (battery) cells isn't regulated. The battery management system needs to be strengthened. There has been a clear partnership between battery manufacturing and battery management." Nitin Gadkari, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister said that the EV fire incidents may have taken place due to higher temperatures. He, in the lower house of the Parliament on March 31 said: "This is a very serious issue and we have ordered a forensic investigation into each individual event.”
