News Synopsis

Amazon Rainforest known as the lungs of the world is suffering from rapid deforestation lately. According to the latest Government satellite data, the number of trees cut down in January is far much than the number in January last year. Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has been accused of this deforestation. Environmentalists say that the satellite data shows the hypocrisy of the Brazilian Government and how they are not committed to their climate goals despite making big claims. Trees are being cut down for their wood and to clear space to plant crops for food companies. Environmentalists say that conserving Amazon Rainforest is very crucial to counter climate changes. Cristiane Mazzetti of Greenpeace Brazil said: "The new data yet again exposes how the government's actions contradict its greenwashing campaigns". The organization has appealed to companies to stop doing business with suppliers who are involved in the deforestation of the Amazon.
