All Government Employees In UP To Submit Proof Against Taking Dowry

Dowry has been a tradition amongst Indian families. The groom's side always, often indirectly, asks for dowry, either in terms of money or simply items such as furniture or cars, from the bride's side. This tradition often forces the bride's family to spend more than they can afford, especially in rural areas where these practices are rampant. Dowry is also the major reason why many Indian families don't want a girl child. Therefore to abolish this practice completely, the Indian government passed a law called the Dowry Prohibition Act in 1961 that prohibits taking dowry. 

But as is the case with most laws in India, the system is such that many still practice it without getting into trouble. Researches reveal that the tradition of dowry is still very much rampant. Amidst this, the UP government's decision to pass a strict policy against their own officials is commendable. The new policy states that every government employee will have to submit an affidavit stating that they have not indulged in this shameful practice. Although the intention of implementing such a policy is good, as is often with every policy in India; the implementation often takes a back seat and corruption finds a way inside. Only time will tell how good of an effect this policy will bring.
