News Synopsis

In the last two weeks, both Airbnb and Uber Technologies have published major multi-dimensional platform updates. This is to provide better service to consumers on the surface and to make the platform more comfortable to use in times of stagnant travel demand. Changes are just as important to revenue as a traveler's sanity.

A survey published earlier this month by travel guide site The Vacationer found that more than 80% of Americans plan to travel this summer, 45% more than once. Expedia Group CEO Peter Kern recently said he expects the busiest travel season ever.

As per the World Travel & Tourism Council forecasts, US domestic travel and tourism spending this year will surpass $1.1 trillion, increasing the pre-pandemic levels by over 11%. Internation travel spending is also expected to reach nearly $155 billion.

By contrast, Airbnb says it has more supply than ever before. During his quarterly call earlier this month, chief executive Brian Chesky said that while his rig expects strong demand for the summer, it doesn't lack accommodation any night of the year.

Influencing consumer itineraries to serve more people is not a new approach for homestay giants. Airbnb has labeled its legacy, the“I’m Flexible” feature “critical,” allowing it to manipulate demand wherever there is supply.
