News Synopsis

In a bid to empower artisans, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has started offering space for self-help groups at various airports to sell their locally-developed products. Currently, under the AVSAR (Airport as Venue for Skilled Artisans of the Region) initiative, these Self Help Groups (SHGs) are already offering their products at 12 airports in India, including Agartala, Kushinagar, Udaipur, and Madurai.

According to the Airport Authority of India, airports at Varanasi, Calicut, Kolkata, Coimbatore, and Raipur, including others, are currently in the process of providing space to local SHGs, in coordination with the respective state governments. Other airports that are also planning to showcase the products of SHG are Vizag, Bhubaneswar, Raipur, Silchar, Dibrugarh, and Jorhat.

In a statement to PTI, AAI Chairman Sanjeev Kumar said, "Showcasing the unique identity and culture of the various regions and states, the objective of AVSAR initiative is to not only provide visibility/platform to SHGs at airports but also introduce the heritage and ethos of the place to air travelers.” He further informed that AAI is committed to supporting the vision of the Prime Minister of creating an atmosphere for strengthening SHGs and promoting local artisans.
