News Synopsis

New reports have come up with more evidence that indicates that a vegan diet has many health benefits, especially in metabolism and stable blood sugar. According to a study published in Diabetologia on April 8, a plant-based diet rich in specific nutrients called polyphenols can help in reducing the risk of diabetes. Diabetologia is the journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.

Researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health studied the data of 10,684 participants. Most of these participants were white, middle-aged healthcare professionals. These researchers focused on metabolites. These chemical compounds are created after the human body breaks down the food for energy. This majorly depends upon the type of food a person eats.

Dr. Frank Hu, senior author of the study and chair of the nutrition department at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health said: "The results are not surprising given that the health benefits of healthy plant-based foods have been well-documented.” He further informed that after understanding the link between specific compounds and plant foods can assist in better understanding which type of food helps us in being healthy. This will eventually protect us from various diseases.
