News Synopsis

China Telecom, one of China's largest telecoms businesses, has had its US license canceled, claiming "national security" concerns. They have 60 days to quit supplying services in America. The Chinese government's control of the corporation, according to officials, allowed it to "access, store, disrupt, and/or misroute US communications." As a result, it may be able to "engage in espionage and other destructive operations against the United States," they claimed.

China Telecom is one of three firms that control the telecoms market in China, with services ranging from broadband internet to mobile and landline telephone networks, the company serves hundreds of millions of users in 110 countries. China Mobile's US license was canceled by the FCC in 2019, and two other state-owned companies - China Unicom Americas and Pacific Networks - are in the process of losing theirs.
