On the occasion of World Environment Day, Zomato, a leading Indian food delivery platform, introduced a rental fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) in Delhi. This initiative aims to promote sustainable delivery practices by enabling delivery partners to rent two-wheeler EVs, offering them a greener alternative to petrol-powered bikes. The pilot program began with 300 electric bikes.
The launch was officiated by Shri Ajay Chaudhary, IPS, Special Commissioner of Police, Traffic Management Division (Zone II), Delhi Police. The event marked an important milestone in Zomato’s push towards sustainability, reflecting growing collaboration between private enterprises and public agencies for climate-focused solutions.
This EV rental initiative supports Zomato’s long-term environmental goal of achieving 100% EV-based deliveries by 2030. The broader vision includes attaining Net Zero emissions across its food ordering and delivery value chain by 2033. With over 37,000 active EV delivery partners as of March 2025, the company has already made significant progress.
These EV-based deliveries have helped avoid nearly 4,900 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (TCo2e) emissions in FY25 alone. This reduction equates to the environmental benefit of planting approximately 220,000 trees, illustrating Zomato’s ongoing efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.
Zomato’s sustainability roadmap focuses on eight core themes:
Waste-Free World
Climate-Conscious Deliveries
Zero Hunger
Inclusive Growth
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Health, Safety, and Well-being for All
Customer Centricity
Governance
This multifaceted approach underlines the company's holistic commitment to both environmental and social sustainability.
Anjalli Ravi Kumar, Chief Sustainability Officer at Eternal, emphasized the importance of accessible sustainable mobility. She said, “Making sustainable mobility accessible to our delivery partners is critical to our mission of ‘better food for more people’. By launching affordable rental EVs, we are enabling partners to thrive while building a greener tomorrow.”
Shri Ajay Chaudhary, IPS, praised the initiative, stating, “Among the various pollution mitigation steps taken in Delhi, it is imperative that industries adopt sustainable practices. Zomato’s move will benefit delivery partners, consumers, and citizens of Delhi by creating positive environmental and economic impacts.”
Delivery partner Saroj Raout, associated with Zomato for two years, shared his enthusiasm: “I’ve wanted to switch to an EV for a while due to its financial and environmental benefits. With the new rental option, I can now reduce running costs, potentially increase my earnings, and help the planet.”
The initial rollout targets the Delhi-NCR region. Based on the response and adoption rate among delivery partners, Zomato plans to expand the program to other parts of India. This initiative also complements the Government of NCT of Delhi’s efforts to make Delhi the EV Capital of India.
Zomato’s rental EV program is a significant step towards transforming food delivery into a more sustainable operation. By promoting accessibility, economic viability, and environmental consciousness, this program lays the groundwork for a greener, more efficient last-mile delivery ecosystem.
