WhatsApp is testing a new Group Member Tag feature on Android beta, allowing users to assign custom identity tags to themselves inside group chats. The feature aims to make group conversations more organized and role-based.
WhatsApp will soon introduce a Group Member Tag feature that will allow every user to create their own identity within group chats.
Hyderabad: WhatsApp has added a new feature to its group chat service. The company aims to make group conversations more organized and is therefore testing a feature that allows users to assign themselves a custom tag. This feature has currently been rolled out to beta users on Android OS, from whom WhatsApp will collect feedback. Let’s understand in simple terms how this new tagging system works and how it can be useful for users.
According to the latest report by WABetaInfo, this feature works like role titles in an office or team—such as Coach, Manager, Moderator, Editor, etc. Now, WhatsApp group users can add a similar tag next to their name. Some key highlights of the feature include:
Every user can set their own tag
Tag length can be up to 30 characters
Special characters, links, or checkmarks will not be allowed
The tag will appear only in the group where it is set
Group admins cannot interfere with these tags
Tags will not be removed even if the app is reinstalled or the device is changed
Tags can be added to both existing and new groups
This feature helps clearly define a user's identity within a group. It will be useful in class groups, office project teams, sports groups, community groups, and topic-based groups where roles matter.
