WhatsApp, the world’s most popular instant messaging platform with over 3.5 billion users, is developing a highly requested feature that will soon allow users to log out of their accounts without deleting any data. Currently, the only way to stop using WhatsApp on a device is to delete the account entirely—a process that results in the permanent loss of chats and media. The upcoming log out option aims to give users the flexibility to take a break or switch accounts while keeping their data intact on the device.
The new feature was recently spotted during a teardown of the WhatsApp beta version for Android by Android Authority and AssembleDebug. It appears to be under development or internal testing and may be introduced in future app updates. According to the beta insights, users will be able to access this log out option via the following path:
Settings > Account > Log out
Upon selecting the log out option, WhatsApp will present users with three choices to manage their data:
Erase all Data and Preferences
Keep all Data and Preferences
Cancel
The most noteworthy part of this update is the “Keep all Data and Preferences” option. This will allow users to log out of WhatsApp without losing messages, files, and media. All stored content will remain on the device, making it easy to resume using WhatsApp later by logging back in.
This could be especially useful for users who want to temporarily step away from WhatsApp without the stress of backing up or losing their chat history.
For users who prefer to start over, the “Erase all Data and Preferences” option will completely remove chat histories, files, and any saved preferences from the device. This option is useful for those who are changing phones permanently or want to reset their WhatsApp experience.
Meanwhile, choosing “Cancel” will exit the menu without making any changes.
Currently, WhatsApp does not support logging out from the primary device—it only allows logging out from linked devices such as desktops or tablets. This limitation has often forced users to either stay logged in or delete their accounts, leading to unnecessary data loss.
By enabling the log out feature on primary devices, WhatsApp is addressing a longstanding user demand. This feature will provide more freedom, privacy, and flexibility, especially for those managing multiple WhatsApp accounts or switching devices.
In another significant update, Meta has officially launched WhatsApp for iPads. This long-awaited release now allows iPad users to install the messaging app and access all of its core features on a larger screen.
Previously, WhatsApp was available on iPads only through workarounds or using WhatsApp Web. With the dedicated iPad version now live, users can enjoy a full-featured and optimized messaging experience on their tablets.
This move strengthens WhatsApp’s multi-device support and aligns with Meta’s broader goal of making its services accessible across platforms.
Both the new log out option and the iPad app launch demonstrate WhatsApp’s commitment to improving user convenience and adaptability. As the platform evolves, it remains focused on creating seamless communication experiences while offering more control over data and device access.
These updates are expected to roll out gradually, with more information likely to be shared as development progresses.
