The Indian Railways is developing a sleeper Vande Bharat Express train that would reach a top speed of 220 kmph, 40 kmph faster than the chair car Vande Bharat trains of the current generation.
According to officials, the semi-high-speed trains, which have gained popularity among train passengers, would be built to move at a speed of 220 km/h. As with the Vande Bharat 2.0, these trains will be made of aluminium rather than steel, which will reduce the weight of the vehicle and increase its speed.
Although the sleeper Vande Bharat trains will have a top speed of 220 kmph, making them the fastest in India, they will operate on the rails at a speed of 200 kmph, they claimed. The new sleeper Vande Bharat trains will take the position of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS trains as India's fastest trains once they are put on the tracks. A 180 kmph top speed is also available on the RRTS.
Despite having a top speed of 180 kmph, the current Vande Bharat Express can only travel at 130 kmph for safety reasons.
According to officials, the chair car Vande Bharat Express trains would gradually replace the Shatabdi Express while the sleeper version will serve as a substitute for Rajdhani Express trains.
400 Vande Bharat trains have been put out to bid by the Railways, and the project will be approved by the end of this month. According to officials, some of the first batch of these trains may also be sleeper variants of the trains produced locally. Four significant domestic and international corporations have expressed interest in the production.
According to the plan, the first 200 Vande Bharat trains will be equipped with seating similar to that of the Shatabdi Express and will be capable of 180 km/hr travel. According to officials, these trains would be made of steel.
200 sleeper Vande Bharat trains made of aluminium would run in the second phase. "The second version of the sleeper Vande Bharat trains will run at a maximum speed of 200 km per hour. For this, the tracks of Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Kolkata railways are being repaired, signal system, bridges are being fixed, and fencing work is going on," official said
Additionally, the official stated, "Apart from this, anti-collision technical armour is being installed on both the railway routes at a cost of Rs 1,800 crore," In the upcoming two years, 400 trains would be produced at ICF in Chennai, Tamil Nadu; Latur, Maharashtra; and Sonepat, Haryana, according to officials.
