Uttarakhand has announced the introduction of a green tax aimed at reducing pollution and promoting sustainable tourism. This new policy will require tourists from outside the state to pay a levy upon entering, with fees ranging from Rs 20 to Rs 80 based on the type of vehicle. This move aligns with the state’s goals of preserving its natural beauty while encouraging eco-friendly travel.
The green cess will apply to both private and commercial vehicles entering Uttarakhand. This ensures that all non-local traffic contributes to the environmental preservation of the region. The fee structure will vary depending on the type of vehicle, ensuring that different categories contribute appropriately:
Three-wheelers: Rs 20
Four-wheelers: Rs 40
Medium-sized vehicles: Rs 60
Heavy vehicles: Rs 80
There are several exemptions under the new green tax system to promote the use of sustainable vehicles and ensure essential services are not disrupted:
Electric Vehicles (EVs): All electric vehicles will be exempt from the green tax, encouraging their use as eco-friendly transportation options.
Two-wheelers and CNG-powered vehicles: These vehicles will also be free from the levy, further promoting cleaner alternatives.
Registered vehicles in Uttarakhand: Vehicles that are registered within the state will not be subjected to the green tax.
Emergency Vehicles: Vehicles such as ambulances, fire trucks, and other emergency service vehicles will be exempt to ensure that these services are not affected.
Sanat Kumar Singh, the Joint Commissioner (Transport), confirmed that the green cess system is already being implemented and is expected to be fully operational by the end of December. The system will utilize Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to identify vehicles registered outside of Uttarakhand. This will allow for smooth identification and tax collection. Once identified, the green tax will be directly deducted from the vehicle owner's FASTag wallet, streamlining the process and ensuring efficiency.
Tourists visiting Uttarakhand will have the flexibility to pay the green tax in various formats to accommodate their travel needs. They can choose from:
Single-day entry: A pay-as-you-go option for those visiting for short trips.
Quarterly pass: Costs 20 times the daily tax.
Annual pass: Costs 60 times the daily tax, providing convenience for frequent visitors.
These options make it easier for tourists to pay the tax and enjoy their stay without inconvenience, encouraging eco-conscious tourism.
The new green tax aims to balance the needs of tourism and environmental conservation in Uttarakhand. By targeting non-local vehicles and promoting the use of cleaner alternatives, the state is taking a proactive approach to protect its natural resources. This initiative will help safeguard the region's pristine environment, ensuring that future generations can also enjoy the state's natural beauty.
