News Synopsis

The US Department of Energy today announced a new $3 billion battery manufacturing and supply chain program to support the transition to electric vehicles.

The money comes from last year's huge infrastructure bill, including $7.5 billion for electric vehicles and $7.5 billion for EV charging infrastructure.

As reported last month, the Biden administration recently met with top US car executives, including Tesla'sCEO Elon Musk and GM Mary Barra, to discuss ways to accelerate the transition to US electric vehicles.

It comes after the Biden administration has made some large investments to try to tackle the challenge from different angles. Recently, the government seems to be particularly focused on bringing more nickel, lithium, graphite, and cobalt mining to the United States to build a domestic battery supply chain.
