After already being acquired by billionaire Elon Musk, Twitter Inc. will remove a three-year ban on political advertising as part of a broader policy change.
In an attempt to facilitate a public conversation around important topics, the company said on Tuesday that it would boost the amount of political advertising it allows in the upcoming weeks. It will also align its advertising policy with that of TV and other media outlets.
Although it wasn't immediately clear how extensive the changes would be it marks a break from a global ban on political advertisements by candidates elected officials and parties that was first declared in 2019 by Jack Dorsey, Twitter co-founder, and CEO at the time.
Donald Trump's re-election campaign was upset by the ban which Dorsey justified by stating that political message reach should be earned not purchased.
But since Musk paid $44 billion to buy Twitter he has charged the company's previous management with censorship and implemented significant changes with no advance notice. The firm has made a number of changes including removing a rule that banned the distribution of Covid false info restoring the accounts of Trump and other right-wing leaders and barring users from following Musk's private jet.
Twitter currently allows some so-called issue ads or cause-based advertisements for some economic, environmental, and social topics. The business said that it will also expand its US policy for such cause-based advertisements.
Twitter received a meager $3 million in revenue from political advertising during the 2018 US midterm elections. yet the flexibility may benefit a business that is now working to stop a drop in ad income as advertisers quit the site over issues about its control methods.
