News Synopsis

TikTok is testing a rating system that automatically blocks age-inappropriate content from reaching young users' feeds. But unlike cinema, age ratings will not be published directly to users. Instead, the system works on the back end of the app and filters content based on age before it's streamed for kids.

The new rating system is a part of a broader policy update that defines the types of content that will be either removed or made ineligible for recommendations on the application. The rating system will be implemented on a small scale for now. TikTok is also working on a separate feature that will allow users to specify the preferred age range of their audience.

Both developments come as social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube grapple with how best to protect children online, following a series of congressional hearings. about user safety.

The platform will continue to invest in new ways to recommend content based on the age-appropriateness of family comfort. It is exploring different ways to empower individuals and families to select additional content preferences for users’ own accounts or for the teens around them through family pairing.
