Tesla is all set to make its long-awaited entry into the Indian automobile market on July 15, 2025. The US-based electric vehicle (EV) giant is expected to unveil its first offering for India — the Tesla Model Y. The launch will mark the beginning of Tesla’s operations in one of the fastest-growing EV markets globally.
Tesla has finalized its first showroom and experience center in Mumbai’s upscale Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The 24,566 sq ft facility will serve as Tesla’s flagship outlet in India, offering product displays, test drives, and after-sales support. The company is also reportedly recruiting sales and service teams for Mumbai and Delhi, with plans to open a second showroom in the capital city soon.
The Tesla Model Y, a mid-size electric SUV, will be the company’s first product in India. It will be offered as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) — likely imported from Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai.
Tesla has already imported six Model Y units, along with Superchargers and accessories worth nearly $1 million, ahead of the launch. These items are sourced from China and the US, highlighting Tesla’s readiness to establish an initial support network for its Indian customers.
The Model Y Long Range RWD variant offers an impressive EPA-estimated range of 574 km and accelerates from 0 to 96 km/h in 5.4 seconds. The All-Wheel Drive (AWD) version, while offering a slightly lower range of 526 km, is quicker — accelerating from 0 to 96 km/h in just 4.6 seconds. Both variants have a top speed of 200 km/h.
True to Tesla’s minimalist philosophy, the Model Y features a sleek, coupe-like silhouette, full LED lighting, and connected taillamps. The SUV measures 4,797 mm in length, 1,982 mm in width, and 1,624 mm in height, with a ground clearance of 167 mm. It is expected to ride on 19-inch wheels, emphasizing both urban and long-distance usability.
Inside, the Model Y offers a dual-tone black and white cabin, accentuated by a panoramic glass roof. The cabin is headlined by a 15.4-inch central touchscreen, which manages nearly all vehicle controls. Rear passengers also benefit from a separate 8-inch display.
Tesla’s signature Autopilot system and over-the-air software updates are expected to be included, though how Autopilot performs on Indian roads remains to be seen.
The Model Y will fall into India’s premium EV segment, with pricing expected between ₹50 lakh and ₹75 lakh (ex-showroom). Due to India’s 70% basic customs duty on imported vehicles, the cost is significantly higher than the US price.
For reference:
Model Y RWD (USA): $37,490 (~₹32.25 lakh)
Model Y AWD (USA): $41,490 (~₹35.69 lakh)
While Tesla had previously shown interest in setting up a manufacturing unit in India, recent reports suggest that the plan has been put on hold. However, if demand proves strong, the company may explore local assembly (CKD) or manufacturing options in the future to bring down prices and avoid high import duties.
Tesla is already laying the groundwork for its ecosystem in India. Along with the imported cars, the company has also brought in Superchargers, which are likely to be installed at strategic locations near showrooms and highways.
This initial launch is expected to be followed by more vehicle models and a broader charging infrastructure, making India one of Tesla’s key expansion markets in Asia.
Conclusion: A New Era for Indian EV Market
Tesla’s official entry into India with the Model Y marks a turning point for the country’s premium EV landscape. Backed by Tesla’s global EV leadership and India’s rising demand for clean mobility, this debut sets the stage for future innovations and market disruptions in the electric vehicle space.
