Tata Communications has announced a strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to develop an advanced AI-ready network in India. This collaboration aims to accelerate the adoption of generative AI, support cloud innovation, and bolster India's position in the global digital economy.
As part of the collaboration, Tata Communications will set up a high-capacity, resilient long-distance network that will connect three major AWS infrastructure regions in India. This national long-haul network will link Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Chennai, creating the backbone for seamless AI and machine learning (ML) operations.
The network will facilitate the development, training, and deployment of scalable AI applications, helping Indian enterprises across industries transition toward intelligent digital solutions.
Tata Communications and AWS aim to unlock AI potential in critical sectors, including healthcare, finance, and education. The AI network will provide the bandwidth, speed, and reliability required for data-heavy workloads and next-gen computing, enabling organizations to innovate faster and serve customers better.
This infrastructure also supports real-time data processing, which is essential for advanced AI use cases such as predictive healthcare analytics, financial fraud detection, and adaptive learning platforms in education.
The initiative is engineered to handle the most demanding workloads, including:
5G technology deployment
Generative AI processing
High-Performance Computing (HPC) tasks
With the growing importance of these technologies, the new AI-ready network will allow Indian businesses to innovate at scale and remain globally competitive.
AWS already has a strong infrastructure footprint in India, with data center regions in Mumbai and Hyderabad, and additional AWS Direct Connect and AWS Edge Network points in Chennai. This widespread infrastructure will be tightly integrated with the new network from Tata Communications, delivering low-latency and high-throughput connectivity for AI-powered operations.
Genius Wong, Executive Vice President at Tata Communications, emphasized the transformative nature of the partnership:
“AI is transforming industries globally, and our collaboration with AWS positions us at the forefront of this revolution in India. By building a tailored network solution, we're ushering in an AI era, reinforcing our position as the long-term partner of choice for global technology leaders.”
Wong also noted that the initiative marks Tata Communications’ largest National Long-Distance program to date, showcasing its capability in executing complex, large-scale connectivity projects.
Meanwhile, Jesse Dougherty, VP for Network Edge Services at AWS, highlighted the role of infrastructure in innovation:
“This collaboration will enable customers in India to innovate at scale with cloud and generative AI, supporting growth in India’s rapidly expanding digital economy.”
Despite the positive announcement, Tata Communications shares were down by 0.44%, trading at ₹1,765.60 on the BSE at 11:00 AM on Tuesday. However, analysts view the collaboration as a long-term growth catalyst for the company.
