Swiggy, a leading food and grocery delivery firm, has expanded its food delivery services in collaboration with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). The service now covers 100 railway stations across 20 states in India, providing train passengers with an enhanced dining experience during their journeys.
With this expansion, Swiggy aims to make train travel more convenient by offering passengers access to over 7 million menu items from more than 60,000 restaurant brands, covering 35 different cuisines nationwide.
Swiggy's vice-president, Deepak Maloo, highlighted the importance of food in Indian train journeys. “Expanding Swiggy Food on Trains to 100 stations allows us to serve passengers with greater convenience and access to a diverse range of meals from across the country,” he said.
The service guarantees delivery to the seat or a full refund, ensuring a seamless ordering experience. Passengers can pre-order meals by searching for "Train" on the Swiggy app and entering their train PNR to access all stations on their itinerary where food delivery is available.
In a move to further improve the train dining experience, Swiggy has rolled out assured cutlery for all Food on Train orders. Each meal now includes a spoon, fork, and tissue, neatly packed in an eco-friendly pouch. The cutlery is made from sustainable materials, reinforcing Swiggy’s commitment to offering a hygienic and environmentally responsible dining experience.
Since partnering with IRCTC in March 2024, Swiggy has achieved several milestones in its railway food delivery operations:
Delivered 35,000 orders on trains with just a 60-second halt.
Recorded close to 54,000 instances of travelers ordering multiple meals in a single trip.
Vijayawada Junction witnessed the highest number of orders, followed by Nellore, Secunderabad Junction, and Katpadi Junction.
One of the most notable orders placed was at Kalyan Junction, where a single passenger ordered 41 burgers and 40 fries. The most popular food item has been biryani, with over 100,000 orders. Other top breakfast choices include dosa, idli, and vada.
Beyond traditional train food staples, Swiggy has introduced a diverse range of global cuisines, including:
Tibetan baked cheesy momos
Cinnamon churros
Mexican mushroom and cheese quesadillas
Lebanese peppy chicken shawarma
This variety allows passengers to enjoy a unique and gourmet dining experience right at their train seats.
Swiggy plans to continue expanding its railway food delivery services to more stations across India. This initiative aligns with the company's broader mission to enhance everyday moments for consumers, wherever they are.
Swiggy’s expansion comes amidst increasing competition in the railway food delivery sector. In September 2023, Zomato partnered with IRCTC to launch 'Zomato - Food Delivery in Trains'. Zomato’s service is currently live across 88 cities and has delivered over 10 lakh orders across 100 stations since its launch.
Swiggy, through its rapid expansion and commitment to high-quality service, aims to strengthen its foothold in the growing train food delivery market.
