All foreigners seeking employment in Singapore are required to obtain a valid work visa or permit, commonly referred to as a work permit. The type of work visa one requires depends on the individual's job role, professional experience, qualifications, and whether they are a student, skilled worker, or entrepreneur.
The Employment Pass (EP) is a work visa designed for foreign professionals, managers, and executives wishing to work in Singapore. To qualify for an EP, applicants must meet certain criteria, including earning a fixed monthly salary that is at least in the top one-third of local salaries. The salary requirement starts at $5,000 per month and can increase progressively with age, up to a maximum of $10,500 for those in their mid-40s.
Starting from 1 January 2025, the EP qualifying salary for new applications will be revised to at least $5,600. Additionally, the financial services sector will require a higher minimum salary of $6,200. These changes will also apply to the renewal of existing Employment Passes that are due to expire from 1 January 2026 onwards.
In addition to meeting the salary threshold, candidates applying for the EP must pass the Complementarity Assessment Framework (COMPASS). This assessment evaluates factors such as the applicant's qualifications, skills, and how the employment will benefit Singapore's workforce.
Foreign entrepreneurs interested in starting and running a business in Singapore need to apply for the EntrePass. This pass is designed for individuals who intend to launch a venture-backed business or one with innovative technologies in the country. The EntrePass is a crucial tool for fostering Singapore's entrepreneurial ecosystem and attracting global talent.
The Personalized Employment Pass (PEP) is available to existing Employment Pass holders or overseas foreign professionals earning a high salary. It offers greater flexibility compared to the regular Employment Pass, including the ability to switch employers without needing a new pass, provided the applicant meets the necessary income criteria.
