Jagdeep Dhankhar (also known as Jat) was born in 1951 into a farming family at Kithana, the village of a few hundred inhabitants located in Rajasthan. Dhankhar began his career as a lawyer, and has been a lawyer in his capacity at the Supreme Court and the Rajasthan High Court. He was appointed as a senior advocate in the year 1990, one year following his entry into active politics. He was closely associated with former deputy prime minister of India Chaudhary Devi Lal and followed his mentor when the latter walked out of the VP Singh government.
The new Vice-President was appointed Governor for West Bengal in July 2019. Meanwhile, Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu's term is drawing to the end on August 10. Naidu was greeted with a fond goodbye during the Rajya Sabha with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior officials in attendance today.
