Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spotlighted India’s growing digital preservation efforts by encouraging citizens to explore the ‘Abhilekh Patal’ portal—an extensive online archive developed by the National Archives of India. The initiative aims to make India’s rich historical heritage more accessible to the public through digitisation.
Speaking during the latest episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of reconnecting with history through technology, highlighting how the platform enables users to explore millions of rare and significant documents from across centuries.
PM Modi noted that the ‘Abhilekh Patal’ portal hosts more than 200 million digitised documents. These include rare manuscripts, historical letters, official records, and archival material linked to major events and personalities that have shaped India’s journey.
Explaining the significance of the platform’s name, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said “Abhilekh” refers to records in Sanskrit, while “Patal” denotes a platform, together forming the acronym for Portal for Access to Archives and Learning.
The initiative represents a significant step in leveraging digital technology to preserve fragile historical documents while ensuring wider public access.
Among the highlights mentioned by PM Modi are the 7th-century Gilgit Manuscripts, written on Bhoj Patra (birch bark). These manuscripts are considered among the oldest surviving records of Buddhist literature and provide valuable insights into early Indian knowledge systems.
Another remarkable inclusion is the 8th-century text Siribhoovalay, known for its unique numerical grid structure. Scholars regard this work as an extraordinary blend of mathematics, linguistics, and cryptography, making it one of the most intriguing texts in Indian history.
The Prime Minister also highlighted historically significant letters associated with Rani Lakshmibai, which provide deeper insights into her decisions during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. These documents reflect her leadership, courage, and resistance against colonial rule.
The portal also contains extensive material related to Subhas Chandra Bose, including records on the Azad Hind Fauj and transcripts of his speeches. These archives provide a comprehensive understanding of his role in India’s independence movement.
In addition, documents linked to Madan Mohan Malaviya are available, covering key milestones such as the establishment of Banaras Hindu University and the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan. These records highlight his contributions to education and cultural revival.
The ‘Abhilekh Patal’ portal also provides access to valuable documents related to the Constituent Assembly of India. These records offer a closer look at the debates, discussions, and decisions that led to the framing of the Indian Constitution.
Such access enables students, researchers, and citizens to better understand the foundational principles of Indian democracy.
During the broadcast, PM Modi paid tribute to Rabindranath Tagore ahead of his birth anniversary, celebrated as Pochchishe Boishakh on May 9.
Recalling his visits to Shantiniketan, the Prime Minister described Tagore as a visionary who made lasting contributions to literature, education, and rural development. He also emphasized the global appeal of Rabindra Sangeet, which continues to inspire audiences worldwide.
The Prime Minister also marked the upcoming anniversary of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, paying homage to the brave individuals who ignited the spirit of patriotism during one of the most significant uprisings against colonial rule.
