News Synopsis

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday addressed the G7 outreach session on energy security held in Kananaskis, Canada, as part of the 51st G7 Summit. In his speech, PM Modi advocated for universal access to clean energy, global regulation of artificial intelligence, and greater representation for the Global South in international decision-making processes.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) shared key highlights of his address via a post on X (formerly Twitter), through spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

Clean Energy: India’s Top Development Priority

PM Modi began by emphasizing that in today’s technology-centric world, affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy remains India’s central focus. He contrasted the 20th century’s competition over energy with the 21st century’s need for technological cooperation.

“In the last century, we saw competition for energy. In this century, we will have to cooperate for technology,” Modi said.
“India has adopted inclusive development, guided by the principles of availability, accessibility, affordability, and acceptability.”

He outlined India’s ongoing efforts in the clean energy sector, citing initiatives such as:

PM Modi also noted that India has fulfilled its Paris climate commitments ahead of schedule and is on track to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2070. At present, renewable energy makes up around 50% of India’s total installed power capacity.

Championing the Global South

The Prime Minister reiterated India’s unwavering commitment to amplifying the voices and concerns of the Global South—a group of developing nations often underrepresented in global forums.

“Countries of the Global South suffer the most from global uncertainties and conflicts. They are the first to be impacted by crises in food, fuel, fertilizers, and finance,” Modi stated.
“India sees it as its duty to bring their priorities to the global stage.”

India’s active role as a bridge between developed and developing countries was a core theme of his G7 outreach message.

Digital Infrastructure and Responsible AI Development

Highlighting India’s achievements in democratizing access to technology, PM Modi spoke about the country’s success in building Digital Public Infrastructure. He linked this to the importance of responsible Artificial Intelligence, stressing that data quality forms the backbone of ethical AI systems.

He advocated for international cooperation to create governance frameworks that support innovation while addressing AI-related risks.

“AI is an energy-intensive technology. The only sustainable way to power our tech-driven society is through renewable energy,” he said.

Tackling AI Risks: Deepfakes and Watermarking

PM Modi raised strong concerns about the misuse of AI technologies, particularly deepfakes, which he described as a major threat to public trust and information integrity.

“Deep fake is a serious concern. Watermarking or clear declarations must be mandatory for all AI-generated content,” Modi asserted.

His remarks underscored the urgent need for global norms to regulate AI outputs, ensuring transparency and accountability.

A Strong Stance Against Terrorism

Switching to global security, the Prime Minister condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, calling it a direct assault on humanity and democratic values.

He emphasized that the global community must adopt a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism, and criticized selective responses.

“There should be no double standards on terrorism,” Modi said.
“We swiftly impose sanctions on some issues, yet reward nations that support terrorism. This must stop.”

Modi called for a unified international policy where countries that back terrorism face tangible consequences.

Conclusion

PM Modi’s participation in the G7 outreach session showcased India’s evolving leadership on global issues—from clean energy to AI regulation and equitable development. His focus on inclusive technology, renewable energy, and Global South advocacy positions India as a key contributor to the global agenda. By addressing pressing challenges such as terrorism and deepfakes, Modi also emphasized the need for global consistency and accountability in policymaking.
