OpenAI’s latest affordable subscription plan, ChatGPT Go, has triggered a massive surge in user adoption in India. The plan, introduced on August 19, is priced at Rs 399 per month and provides expanded access to messages, image generation, and file uploads.
Nick Turley, Head of ChatGPT, revealed that the launch of this low-cost subscription has led to a remarkable growth in India. On social media platform X, Turley shared that “total ChatGPT subscribers more than doubled” in India in just over a month of ChatGPT Go’s release.
Price in India: Rs 399 per month.
Features: 10x higher limits on text messages, image generation, and file uploads compared to free users.
Memory Retention: Extended memory to enable more personalised, context-aware conversations.
Target Audience: Emerging markets where affordability plays a key role in scaling adoption.
This feature-rich yet affordable plan has helped expand ChatGPT’s reach in India, making advanced AI tools accessible to millions.
Turley also announced that ChatGPT Go is now available in Indonesia, making it the second country after India to receive the plan. In Indonesia, the subscription costs 75,000 Rupiah per month, which is approximately equivalent to Rs 399, keeping the pricing consistent across both countries.
He further noted that Indonesia is among ChatGPT’s “top five markets by weekly active users.” This expansion underlines OpenAI’s strategy to capture high-growth regions where AI adoption is accelerating rapidly.
India remains a priority market for OpenAI. CEO Sam Altman has confirmed that the company will establish its first office in India by the end of 2025, strengthening its presence in one of the fastest-growing AI ecosystems globally. Altman is also expected to visit the country soon to engage with policymakers, businesses, and developers.
India currently ranks as the second-largest market for ChatGPT users globally, after the United States.
OpenAI’s expansion into Indonesia comes amid rising competition. Less than two weeks earlier, Google introduced its AI Plus plan in the country.
Price: 75,000 Rupiah per month (identical to ChatGPT Go).
Discount: 50% off for the first six months for early adopters.
Features:
Access to Gemini 2.5 Pro.
Veo 3 Fast for video creation.
NotebookLM integration.
Gemini inside core Google apps.
200GB Google One storage bundled.
This sets the stage for a fierce battle between OpenAI and Google in capturing the affordable AI subscription market in Asia.
The introduction of ChatGPT Go at Rs 399 has emerged as a true game-changer in India’s AI landscape, making advanced generative AI tools more affordable and accessible to millions of users. The subscription plan has already demonstrated its impact, with the number of ChatGPT subscribers more than doubling within just over a month of its launch.
This rapid adoption highlights both the strong demand for AI-driven services and India’s growing role as a crucial market for OpenAI. With the plan now extending to Indonesia, and OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman confirming plans to set up the company’s first office in India by the end of 2025, the company is clearly investing in long-term growth in emerging economies.
At the same time, competition from Google AI Plus, which offers similar pricing and features, is expected to drive innovation further. Ultimately, consumers will benefit through more options, better features, and greater affordability.
